  Choosing A Wine

Q & A

Q. What is the difference between "old" and "new" world wines?

A. Old world wines come from the classic wine regions of Europe, such as France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Spain. The character and taste of these wines is strongly influenced by the soil and land its produced on.

New world wines come from regions such as Latin America, Australia, America, South Africa and New Zealand. The character and taste of these wines is based on production techniques, such as advanced irrigation systems, heavy reliance on oak aging and adding various natural compounds to the wine.

Q. What are the "sulfites" contained in wines?

A. Sulfites are naturally occuring compounds in grapes which are also added to wines during production. They act as preservatives to prevent damage to the wine by oxygen and help prevent organisms from growing in the wine.

Q. What are "organic" wines?

A. These are wines that have been grown in a vineyard that has been certified organic or that uses mostly organic farming techniques, and the wine has no added sulfites (USDA).
This means that no chemical or artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or other treatments were used on the grapevines.

Q. What are "green" wines?

A.  These are wines where the farming on the vineyards is undertaken in an environmentally friendly manner and using socially responsible practices.
